I DID DO IT what

Not perfect but definitely works. I had to remove a bit of wood on one piece to get it to fit, and remove the old door fixture, but it WORKS.

The top half will be a screen, this is the new pigeon bedroom.

Thanks to everyone for the tips! Esp @MethDozer it was definitely easier to pop the pin and mount th brackets separately

And eventually I will remove all of the horrible paint from this door and have it be natural wood again.

Any suggestions on a finish/oil?

Oil finishes are nice but they require reaplying and dont protect well. Personally I would go with a polyurethane or spar urethane. Personally I libe the look of an oil based spar urethane over minwax or varethane gunstock(color) stain. Ool based poly and spar urethane yellows sligntly and adds a richness. Spar urethane builds more than poly and adds a glassy depth to the finish. Polyurethane sits flatter and if you dont like the yellowing of oil based go with water based. Oil is is also much more durable
