I will share why this song is quite personal to me too. Do you have similar memories with this song too?
So this song is The Way I Feel by the rock band 12 Stones which I guess many 2000s rock music fans here would know. So this is another song which has been personal to me. That's because I remember hearing this for the first time in 2021 when I was 20 and in the middle of my engineering (undergrad) years and also Covid pandemic was going on so I was in home. So this song instantly resonated with me as the music video shows a boy in high school being bullied and I was heavily bullied and humiliated in my school days too. But there is this another thing about the music video which made the song feel different to me and more than just a song. So due to the bullying, I had extreme low self esteem so I avoided talking to girls in school days and even at the time during my engineering. But in my teenage years I was kinda content and not that said being single but 20 was when I realized that I wanted a girlfriend but was still too shy.
So as I live in the city Bangalore in India but Bengali, I was like India is really conservative and wishing I could go abroad and maybe date an American or European woman as those countries are more liberal and i didn't (still don't) want to do arranged marriage in future. Yes I know I overgeneralized India as a whole at the time as in Bangalore too I was mostly in the Eastern and Southern part of the city which were more residential or slightly less cosmopolitan parts of the city and I wasn't going to the more Central areas of the city which are more cosmopolitan, upscale and open. So yeah I was wondering how things would have been if I was born in the west. So the music video also shows a girl living at the house opposite to the boy's house and I was wondering how different my high school life would have been if I had a female neighbor my age and maybe in the west so yeah I was kinda idealizing the music video. It felt like I was way too isolated when I was being bullied and obviously still isolated during that pandemic days too so I was wondering how it would be have a girl in my life or wishing my school days were different.
At the time I was always wishing I could move abroad as I was slowly disliking the conservatism of India and overgeneralizing the city and country but in 2022 when I was 21 and finally visited Church Street of our city Bangalore with my parents, I was shocked seeing how different it was. It was cobblestone pedestrian only Street and really youthful and cosmopolitan and looked much more westernized but as I was still too shy and obviously with parents, I couldn't talk to the women. But that's when I decided not to only limit myself about a foreign girlfriend when I don't even know when I will visit abroad and definitely wanted to date Indian women as well and started using dating apps instead. Then in 2023, MBA started. Not gonna lie, the guitar intro came into my mind in my MBA too when Anshika who was my crush asked me on our first day whether I had lunch or not maybe. Then later on as I started exploring UB City, Lavelle road, Church Street etc I started seeing and meeting expat women too and as well tourists from multiple countries and started talking to them and had memorable moments too and also talking with Indian women as well. Now at 25, I talk to both foreign and Indian women and still find it crazy how 5 years ago I used to think the only way to meet foreign women was by going to abroad or getting into an LDR online but nowadays I can meet them in person in Bangalore itself as it's a cosmopolitan tech city of India. Here's the song tho
