It was complicated

The person who taught me unconditional love was my mother. I know that now.

I saw a video showing a field in a fog that said "God says someone has been waiting for you".

And you are supposed to imagine that person or animal or whatever coming out of that fog towards you.

I just want to see you, mom.

I just want to hear your stories again.

I could listen to you narrate every mundane minute of every day of your life.

And all the stories of your childhood in the 60's, and life through the 70's, being with dad in the 80's, being a single mom in the 90's,

We never got around to what happened in the 2000's. Or why you did what you did.

But we still ended up together huh... isn't that something...

Full circle....

Of all the things I never saw coming.... you dying here at my literal apartment.

The odds... wow.

But it is my birthday, and you died 2 years and 10 days ago.

Cheers to the woman who wanted to give her kids such a good Christmas that she wrapped every single thing from Dollar Tree individually and put it in a foot long stocking.

Cheers to the woman who always answered the call. From any of us.

Cheers to the woman who all of the children she babysat still remember.

I knew what unconditional love was when I went to the post office to mail something for work one day. I came out and you were parked there.

I don't know why I was suddenly just filled with joy, because I was lucky enough to see my mom on a random weekday at a random time during the workday. I was so happy to see you. You just made my day. I got to talk to you and that was enough for me.

I will never forget that you always said that someone in your past mentioned you could be a hand model. I remember being drunk one day in my 30s and you coming over and us watching the "Cops" the TV show and I took your hand, and it was so small.

And when your sister came to see you on your deathbed, she took your hand and said, "you always had such pretty hands".

Of all things she could say.

Funny, huh...
