People often choose the pain they know over the peace they do not.

Your brain’s primary job is to keep you alive, not to make you happy.

To the subconscious, familiar means safe …. even when familiar means painful. Your brain knows how to handle what it’s seen before.

But something genuinely new …. real peace, deep joy, openness …. reads as a threat, simply because it’s unknown.

That’s why people go back to what hurts them. Not because they’re broken….
Because they already know how to survive it.

I wish it was just that simple. It's not even that simple for even animals. And they run mostly on instinct. Fear is THE most basic instinct in all life. Yet instinct is even more basic.

@DeWayfarer Indeed.... Fear is a natural instinct that keeps us safe.

@Renkon My point is to stress there are other instincts in play.

And BTW even AI agrees with that.

Example danger raises fear, yet quickly turns to anger when young are at stake.

That is true for even humans. Both are instinctual. Yet the more base instinct will always win out.

@DeWayfarer That's good line of thinking.
