The One Last Leaf

I stare up there before the Spring
Looking for a breeze
Clinging to the branch
Beyond the endless freeze

The sleeping caused by cooling
In the ground that holds my tree
And all my other leafly friends
Have left and are carefree

They lay in piles on the ground
Without a single care
And all I see when I look down
Is that they all just left me here

I tried a million times to fall
But this branch just holds me tight
It’s kept me past my want to live
Throughout these winter nights

And now Springtime is upon us
And I stare up with ends turned down
Begging God to take me
And just lay me on the ground

But it seems he has some hatred
Built up there inside his holy heart
And he takes it out upon me
And forces on me this new start…

And though I begged for mercy
Praying for a proper way to leave
My God has cast me down again
And told me I’m here to grieve

He’s told me that my time’s not done
He’s granted no reprieve
He’s assured me that every leaf that fell
All the blame was all on me.
