You determine when your labor is available for sale. Your days on this earth are yours alone. You can sell them or not. Do not request days off.

Tell them what days your labor is available for purchase.

@EBSVC I'm saying this because here in Europe employers have to pay monthly fees for healthcare and social insurance and if you asked for the unpaid leave, they would have to sign you off and then in again, that's why you announce a sick day because it's basically a paid leave, so even if you're not working, they still pay you and for you. If the system was more flexible and it would be easier to just do that, I'd see no problem but the way it is now, it would probably cause a great chaos in the insurance companies. That's why employers are entitled to your time. They would not if you were self-employed, paying the insurance yourself and offer your services as it suits you.
