Remembrance Day

Today is Remembrance Day here in Canada. A day to remember those who lost their lives fighting in the various wars that Canada has fought since before it became its own nation. I remember as a child seeing some very old men at the cenotaph. Mom said they had fought in the Boer War. Beside them stood some old men who could be my grandfather. They had fought in WWI. Beside them stood some men who could have been my father. They had fought in WWII. Over the years I have witnessed other Veterans at the cenotaph. Korea, Kosovo, Afghanistan etc. When I was a young man I joined the reserves and quickly rose through the ranks. Then I became a Christian. I resigned my commission and became jaded toward the whole war industry. The wars the nation had fought didn't advance the cause of freedom or rightness in the world. In fact the more wars that were fought the more our freedoms disappeared. As a child we were taught to laugh at the thought police of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. Now our nation is fully engaged in that very behaviour. So what was the reason for the wars? Certainly not freedom. Certainly not life. Certainly not religion. Sadly wars are fought and young men and women die so some rich people can get richer and some powerful people may gain more power. To all the young folks out there. DO NOT ENLIST and put your life on the line for your nation. It is not for your nation that you will be killed. It will be for the gain of a few rich people.
