How long do they last for

@SW-User They kind of ebb and flow. they are not static so they get brighter then fade all the while they are changing shape. So it is really hard to put a time on them. A few minutes to over an hour. This display was quite active while other times they are just a ghostly glowing band in the sky.

@hippyjoe1955 that would be cool to see

@SW-User They are rather awe inspiring. One night I was watching them and they were multi-coloured with reds and yellows and faint mauve mixed in. I was sitting very still in an empty field when I started to hear what sounded like maybe the wind rustling the grass. Except there was no wind and there was no grass. I later found out that I had heard the Northern Lights. Others have heard the same thing.

@hippyjoe1955 I was curious if they made any sounds

@SW-User Not usually but on very rare occasions they do make kind of a staticky sound like dead grass leaves rubbing against each other in a very light breeze. Very hard to describe. Once you hear it you will never forget it.
