Still gives me the Shivers in my bones

[media=https://youtu.be/PH0K6ojmGZA]

They say that everyone of Calypso's own will go through a life or death test by the sea once in their life. My test came far off of Catalina Island. My father and I decided to go on the sailing trip to Catalina. I had never been before so I was looking forward to the adventure.

He offered to bring my girlfriend at the time along and asked if I could find a friend for him which I obliged. We loaded up the cargo the drinks the spare guns and fishing line and all the goodies for a wonderful weekend. Making the crossing it was docile weather the water beautiful Azure blue and very pleasant I caught a couple of Bonito and skipjack on the way over and we docked in cat Harbor about 5:00 that evening so I decided to put on the scuba gear and shoot a couple of Yellowtail to impress the ladies. Which I came back with one very nice fish and another fairly decent second catch. We enjoyed Barbecue on the back of the boat accompanied with red wine and Monica and I took a romantic walk down the sands that evening it was a wonderful night. The next afternoon we awoke took a swim to refresh and a walk around the North End of the island.

We decided to set sail headed south on a course along the cliff which was a beautiful sight rocks of white seagulls and beautiful Skies like something out of a story book or a postcard

We t a c k e d South around Avalon and came about 25 miles out to sea to head back on a slightly nor easterly course to San Pedro and into Redondo Beach

Somewhere between the sea and San Pedro I decided to go down and take a nap. I awoke being thrown into the bulkhead dish is flying everywhere and Furniture coming loose from their bearings. The Seas had gone from 2 to 3 foot to 20 and 30 ft rollers with 10 ft visibility and horizontal rain a total gray out. The fun was when the mass snapped and fell on the c-word side of the boat threatening to act like a sea anchor and instantly capsize us. Acting quickly my father and I l a s h e d the wheel with bungee corn and grabbed fire ax to separate the cable which we did just in time then as if On Cue the nine horsepower Johnson motor died. Not a life jacket aboard the girls hunkered for shelter in the bow quarters. My father calmly retreated to the cabin will I held the wheel and the bow into the sea so that we would not take a broadside and roll. Long Beach rescue Long Beach Rescue we are going down and we have four souls aboard. Water ditching mayday mayday mayday came the call. He looked into my eyes with tears and calmly shook my hand. It has been an honor to be your father he said. It was the only time he ever told me I love you. And something more than anger deep inside me weld up I shook my fist at the sky and I cursed with all my might and said I refuse to die out here today. And I kicked that motor as hard as I could it was the only thing that I could lash out at. And wouldn't you know it started to write back up and ran for a full 8 hours to limp us into Redondo Harbor. The rails were destroyed the Mast completely gone are vessel was a wreck. People came down to see the damage it was so unbelievable. When we arrived I climbed up the vessel calmly kissed the Dock and told my dad I will go back on the ocean on Twin screws a powerboat doesn't matter but no more of this Gilligan's Island shit for me. We went to dinner that night before of us and he spent an unbelievable amount of money and we got three sheets drunk to the wind the only time I have ever been shit-faced plastered around my old man. And he toasted tonight we celebrate the fact that we are having dinner and the sharks are not having us. To this day he still does not talk about it whenever I bring it up he says Kevin you still don't understand how close we came. My reply is always the same yes Dad I do remember I was there. But take heart once you have been judged by the sea to be worthy she will never harm you or never take you. Because now you are one of her very own. It holds a deep significance to me when I hear the Bell chime to salute those who have never come home to Port.

@geoam1 yes I too have known more than a few myself and it's always a sad thing to lose a man. But like they said in the movie that I love the guardian I do as much as I can swim as fast as I can. That's all that I can do and the Sea takes the rest. I will tell you that even the treasures Waters of the Pacific can sometimes be more pleasant than the gulf though. When it gets rough out there it is like a freaking egg beater and a blender because of the shallow depth and the Warm Winds it is enough to turn your stomach sideways. I much prefer the deeper Blue Waters. I grew up on the ocean on all three coasts. I've been driving and piloting vessels since I was 6 years old. I'm rated for up to 50 ft. My father has a master's license and honestly he should have known better than to not bring any flotation gear.
