I am really stuck in a very collectivist environment now. What should I even do?
As you all know i am doing an internship in a edtech startup and just joined last month and currently also in last semester of my MBA. As I live in Bangalore in India, the internship environment is collectivist. India itself is a collectivist country where people have tight knit groups rather than individualistic. In my internship too, many are stuck with their own friends circle from their college or formed circles fast enough and stuck in them. What i am doing is I am directly approaching girls in my office during breaks for socializing and i even asked 2 girls for coffee recently. I am not forming any bonds through friends circle and directly approaching them for talking. Many of them prioritize their existing friends over me and we dont have much conversations daily. Some are nicer while some are reserved but most of them stick to their own comfort groups. Honestly i am 24 and most of these Indian women doesnt seem like true adults even though they are in their 20s as they are too dependent on their friends and even asking a girl for a coffee can become gossip instead of it being between us 2.
On contrast I talked to several foreign women in this luxurious mall UB City in our city who are mostly expats and they especially the Western one seem like true adults when we talk. They are independent and its easy to have 1 on 1 conversations with them whereas in my internship I am having hard time socializing due to the collectivist nature of it. It just sucks because i cant visit UB City regularly to socialize with foreign women and in the internship most Indian women are stuck with their groups and there is no cafeteria here either so its hard to socialize.
