Asking a girl for coffee turned into a gossip and some teasing. Was i being too bold in a more collectivist environment in India?
As you all know I am a final year MBA student interning now. I already asked one girl for coffee last week and she said she will think about it and tell later. Yesterday I tried asking this another girl(lets call her R) for coffee. She is 23-24 and I am also 24 and we are both interns and didnt have much 1 on 1 conversations as she is in a different team for the internship so yesterday morning I walked up to her and said her "Hey whats up? We havent had a 1 on 1 conversation for a while so are you free during evening break so we can grab some coffee?" And I said it in front of her team members but our managers werent there so it wasnt that bad. Honestly i heard Calvin Harris song before entering the office so i was feeling confident and bold like Calvin Harris too.
She gave a surprised smile and just like the other girl she too said she will think about it and say it. She is an extroverted North Indian girl and I am Bengali but even she probably found my move too bold. Its an EdTech Startup with basically everyone in their 20s so many took it lightly and none of the managers were around either and i asked about it during evening break instead of during work hours. But it definitely became a gossip. As I live in Bangalore in India, in general India is more collectivist country so everything turns into gossip as many are in tight knit groups and people dont mind their own business so asking a girl for coffee can become a gossip too. One of her male team member is teasing both of us just for fun and kept me asking whether I took her for coffee but i laugh it off and everything is fine now. What do you feel?
