@being
The difference of course is that in this second childhood I am conscious of life in ways that i never was the first time round. So in fact I think I am enjoying it as least as much, perhaps more. Then the joy was more purely visceral, a connection with the land, the flowers and trees that grew on it, and the animals that fed on them. Now it's a little more intellectual but in exchange for not climbing the trees (and risking a broken neck on the way down) I get to appreciate the inner beauty because now I know some of why and what a tree is. Mind you I'm having some quite visceral experiences now too, though of a kind that as a child I only knew about intellectually. :-)
They (who is this mysterious they) won't write a manual, the best one can hope for is that one writes some notes in the margin of the manual that does not exist. Tom Sawyer didn't have a manual but Mark Twain nonetheless wrote a lot of notes in the margins.
Yes I know Tom Sawyer is a fictional character but they don't come much more real, and Mark Twain is almost as fictional despite being real.
what's happening later on
Life gets simpler, at least if you are lucky enough to have good health and enough to live on with enough left over to enjoy oneself. For me it's a little like returning to my sunny and carefree childhood, with few responsibilities, and someone else (my pension) providing most of my needs.The difference of course is that in this second childhood I am conscious of life in ways that i never was the first time round. @ninalanyon You're such a storyteller, I love reading you.
And quite comforting. I'm a lot better and more optimistic today...

@being Me, a story teller? It only works when I'm not trying. At school, over half a century ago, I hated English lessons because we had to write essays and stories. I could never think of anything to say.
Of course now it's too late to get a better grade I've gathered lifetime of opinions and never run out of things to say!
