I wonder why some people like to tell you how awful you are but still want to be attached to you

It doesn't really make sense.

Could possibly be to make you codependent if it’s in a relationship scenario. It lowers your self esteem till you believe it and it weakens your resistance to them.
If it’s a friend then I would definitely question that friendship because to me that’s toxic.
If you’re talking about romantic relationships, it sounds like a control tactic out of the abuser’s handbook. Lower your self esteem so you don’t leave, feeling you don’t deserve/can’t get any better.

You mean the "I love/like you, but" folks... yeah, they want you to do what they want, act the way they want you to act, respond to them the way they want. etc.

All red flags and people to stay away from.

It’s a form of emotional abuse. It’s supposed to make you feel like you are not worthy of anything but their conditional love.

trying to lower self confidence in an attempt to make 'things' easier id guess -_-
Indeed it doesn't...

Some people like to have someone to feel superior to

Because they don’t think you’re awful, but want you to believe you are.
They want to keep you dependent and submissive. If your self-esteem is low and they position themselves as "the best you can hope for", they can treat you the way they want to, without fear of you dumping them. 🥺
