everyone loves demolition...replacing 70 year old boiler adventure...$12,000 and again contractor is ill prepared
finally found a well experienced contractor whose specialty is residential boilers. everyone has same excuse\story, good help is impossible to find. the boiler is from the 1950's so obviously the joints will be difficult to break loose. and the boiler weighs 500 pounds as well and it must be hauled up from the basement. guess what my contractor shows up with NO HELPER!!
i the paying customer end up supplying tarps to protect floor, rags as usual, sledge hammer, crow bars, garden hose, dolly, cleanup, and my own maual labor!!
after the first hour i decide it is time to check and sure enough he needs my help using the torch to heat joints while he bangs and uses pipewrench to loosen them. the boiler is actually 5 seperate chambers that can be pried apart. after lot more pounding and banging we get the first chamber free. judging it to weigh 75 pounds i realize the rest of the unit must weigh at least 300 pounds. it will take many hours of banging and pounding....OR we use my dolly to get the rest of the unit upstairs and be done in a matter of minutes.
we 2 old farts did it!! mission accomplished!! and many more warm winters to come. no lukewarm air from a furnace]\heatpump on those extra cold\windy\rainy winter days!!
on monday will be installing a new more efficient new yorker boiler...YAHOO!!
