Scotch And Soda
"Scotch and soda a jigger of gin oh what a spell you got me in" When the Kingston Trio came out with that song the innocence of that period of time has been lost. Today's violent world where insurrection, mayhem and horror are all a reality it would be such a welcome relieve if the world took the time to remember a period in time of refined sophisticated elegance.
Scotch and soda, that jigger of gin. Ask anyone who reaches a certain age there is nothing to compare with a cup of rich coffee in the morning and a fine glass of Scotch to top off an evening. No matter where you are we all need a little relaxation after a day that for most of us is filled with unprecedented anxiety, frustration, and a certain amount of apprehension.
The trials and tribulations of our society today gone is a sophistication associated with an era long since past. Too many of us are caught in a whirlwind of modern day living, or is it just existing? We have become too caught up in the unprecedented turmoil of our surroundings. It is so sad that an era of refinement coupled with a defined etiquette is all but lost in today's culture. So hurried are we now in our attempt to be something were not only to realize that in creating this illusion of stability and contentment has redefined the 21st century.
A fine glass of Scotch is like putting on the Ritz. The epitome of sophistication and refinement that was a symbol of an era. An era where no matter how much misery there was people over came it. If it was just for a moment and escaped to a self imposed elegance. I like to thing of myself as one who like my father before took the time at the end of the day to hoist a fine glass of Scotch in giving thanks just for making it through the day. For me this is the symbol of dapper sophistication that has become a time honored tradition.
Remembrance of that time since past bring images of an elegance not associated with the reality of today. Too often society has failed in their attempt to retrieve any portion of this refinement that was the norm of that period when people savored moments in a much simpler, and a slower pace of time. With today's shift in society and culture a new norm has emerged one that embraces a more hurried, more isolated, and more abstract in tone. The rush of today so apparent in the cities of New York and even London leaves one breathless. The society of today no longer is cognizant of a fellowship that came between one another as was the norm of that culture those many years ago.
We all should hoist a glass of fine Scotch in remembrance of that period in time where society was much more acumen to a refinement and sophisticated etiquette that prevailed more than a half century ago. In doing so we just may begin to resurrect the refined elegance that has long since been obscured by the cultural shift that has taken hold of societies today.
