A lot depends on how you left things and your intent.
Friendship is not easy but if you played the "game" well enough... you can almost always get in touch no matter the # of years.
If it's an old flame... I'd really think back and figure out how you'd define your relationship with that person. Was it a true and good friendship (with some extra passion and emotions) or was it just a relationship with zero friendship.
If you're trying to rekindle a friendship and that's your intent... I don't think time should ever give you pause. On the other hand.... relationships are always messy.
