Does life become linear?

I remember being younger and feeling overwhelmed of the infinite possibilities ahead of me. And now I feel I have no choice over anything, and no one around me does. I don't care about being happy anymore, I just need to survive and try to suffer as least as possible.

I think with age, most areas of life become more narrowly focused as one's responsibilities increase. That was in a time when people actually accepted those responsibilities. Now, I'm not so sure. People seem unwilling to commit to a single relationship, and by extension, to having children. Maybe they can live their lives more playfully to an extent, if they don't end up "married to their job" which many also seem to be.
