You ever read a book that had good advice, but probably won’t be that useful?

Make It Stick was an interesting, well-written book on better approaches to learning/remembering than conventional wisdom about studying. It gave great advice on making contextual connections while learning ideas, tying it to cues, the value of practicing delayed retrieval ‘self quizzing’, applied knowledge strategies, etc and perceptual/inference misfires.

It’s worth reading if you need to retain/use a lot of information toward your specialization,

—but unfortunately the pace of most curriculums doesn’t allow for that kind of time to be spent on any particular topic, and often doesn’t circle back..

I love to learn. I get a lil, happy burst of dopamine from it, but a lot of people who buy this book are doing so with the hope it’ll improve their study skills in general. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The intention is there, that might be helpful enough.

I learned conventional ways to study, but not in the manner this book discusses @HannahSky

@WhateverWorks I actually don't like how to books, they want you to use their methods more than actually learn what you need to learn
WhateverWorks · 36-40
It’s not really a ‘how to’ book, so much as a discussion on studies’ findings about memory and learning. @HannahSky

Youre damn right about that school doesnt give enough time to really let things sink in. You have to do that part on your own and even then it's too short.

Mostly it makes me think about the general education requirements at Uni, but during the middle school and high school as well. I like the idea of peioke having knowledge not only within their field, but, but a broader knowledge about life and the world. Within the context of this book though it does seem like a waste of time by sheer, ineffective design. The classes never give you enough time to absorb the material. You push through your world history class, worl just hard enough to get a decent grade on that exam about the French Revolution than likely will soon forget everything you spent the last few months (and a pretty penny) learning to regurgitate. @WhateverWorks Well thats why I try to learn the things I want to learn. Of course in the end I also have to learn the things on the exams as well, but you can usually squeeze those things in the last couple of weeks. Up until that you dive into the more fun side of the course.

I guess I can’t add much to that. My experience of University has the gentle labeling, “nontraditional learner” 🤭 which is a very nice way of saying I went back to school when I was old 😆, juggling work and single mom stuff. @MartinTheFirst
