It does seem ironic. There are so many dynamics at work here. We want confirmation of our own value, or, at least, what we take our value to be. So, in our insecurity, we want to satisfy that need by knowing we're attractive in whatever ways the identity requires. However, once the identity (which most people refer to as the ego) is secured by another's attention, the job of satisfying the identity is finished, and there's no need to continue the pursuit. The craving for attention and constancy is, in itself, an indication of need (or possibly, neediness), and not an indication of knowing one's own true worth.
