When conservative says "we don't havea gun problem, we have a mental illness problem" why don't they do anything to help those with mental illnesses?

It's a lot harder to cure. It's easier to treat an infection than the way someone thinks about themselves. And they always give you a magic pill that you become dependent on, but it never changes the original reason you felt bad.
