Are you resistant to doing something if you have to do it?

Whether it is a ritual of hygiene, an appointment, or following a specific guideline or law, does being told (or feeling) that have to do something make you want to do it less?

@NoahB Same. I am doing something that I enjoy, this is the work I want to do, but the obligatory nature of it is always going to lessen some of its appeal.
Yes, I took a course recently (professional development sort of thing, not for credit) with a long reading list and I totally did other readings on the same topics instead! Don't tell ME what to read!!

Work, as others have said. Probably because bosses are often horse's asses about whatever task.
