If you fall off that wall and break your leg, don’t come running to me !

If the wind changes you’ll stay like that !
MariaJ · 36-40, F
She still does lol
SW-User
One. She used to say not to sit so close to the TV. That's it.
meggie · F
@SW-User I remember being told. "if you sit too close to the TV you will get square eyes"
SW-User
@meggie I mean, it's odd to say, but good advice (in hindsight).
Lostpoet · M
British and American words sometimes have different cadences.
Every one of them😂
And i don’t have curly hair!
meggie · F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales and probably more that you've forgotten.

SammyJo · 51-55, F
Pretty much all...except the dad stuff...

...and I said some of them to my own daughters!

😱😱
BeastK · 46-50, M
This must be British as I have heard very very few of these.
meggie · F
@BeastK they are, sorry
BeastK · 46-50, M
@meggie It's nothing to be sorry about. It's just a culture I didn't grow up with.
It is a bit different for Americans but almost all your sayings have a reasonable approximation in our version of English!

Some are translatable. I will try to paraphrase the one's I understand. Another edit on the way!

The reference to Blackpool illuminations is a reference to there being too many lights left on in a room. They hold a festival of lights in Blackpool!

American moms would likely say "No dessert until you have eaten your dinner." and to suggest that you say "Excuse me, I couldn't hear you." or something along that line instead of "What?"
Thespis · M
So this is an international moms/mums thing?
Larksky · M
I got 20 and more but none of that
leahlikes · 22-25, F
every single 1
Yulianna · 26-30, F
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M

Eating crust will make your hair curly

And

Wait til your father gets home!!!
meggie · F
@Ambroseguy80 i think some households has their own version of some of these too.
Ambroseguy80 · 56-60, M

If we didn't finish our meal, my mom would say, "There are kids starving in China".
meggie · F
@chrisCA yes my mum said that too, usually when we ate everything else and left the vegetables
Peppa · 31-35, F
15 out of 20 but I'm sure her Jamaican ones were of a similar nature

I’ve told you a thousand times
meggie · F
@bijouxbroussard "Back in my day" my gran used to say all the time
@meggie Lol, I find myself saying it sometimes. 🤭
SW-User
Yes, all these. Another was "because Y is crooked"
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@SW-User When you used to ask “Why ?” and your mother would respond with “Y has a long ta(I)le !”
SW-User
@Picklebobble2 I don't remember that one. Regional variation maybe 😂
ArtieKat · M
Most! My mother was more refined than "shit & sugar" - she'd just say "S & S" 😂
Lostpoet · M
Eat your crust or you'll get curl hair? WTF
meggie · F
@Lostpoet if you don't eat your crusts you won't get curly hair
Lostpoet · M
@meggie Lol. I understood it i just mean that's some racist shit right dere.
Wiseoldman · M
@Lostpoet Everyone knows eating burnt toast gives you curly hair
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
The one that made me laugh, in later life: "I'll make you smile out of the other side of your face!" when you're in the shit, but grinning nervously!🤣
I heard ALL of those from my mum.
I wanted to kill her. 😤
HotPizza71 · 51-55, MVIP
