What is your raison d'etre?

Abstraction · 61-69, M
I was maybe 14. An Australian interview with a Vietnamese man on TV years ago, who had been through war his entire life, lost his family... The interviewer asked him how he can possibly cope with life.

The man said this. When i was a child, my father taught me that, no matter what happens... always live by your values. When i do that, my life has meaning.

At the time I was kind of struck by it but it made no sense to me at all.

Now, I think he was one of those people. Someone who discovers the treasure that everyone else walks past because they don't recognise it when they see it. Now I know psychology has finally caught up with him and supports what he says. My own life in its highs and lows, triumphs juxtaposed with sadness and disappointments... I think I learnt that he's totally right.

We mistake meaning for happiness, but happiness is like a kite. If you chase your kite, it will fall. If you run into the wind, following your values no matter what, your kite will soar.

To help others along on their journey; to help, encourage, heal, give strength to. To love.

We have to Google the questions now? This place is getting challenging.

I didn't choose to exist but I do choose to live :)
