What Personal Protective Equipment is appropriate?

A person working on a platform 8 feet in the air using a 50' lanyard firmly attached to a beam 2 feet above the worker's head. Everything is right except the worker will hit the floor before the lanyard stops him.
A truck driver walks into a welding shop and stares at the arc because he is wearing his truck driver sunglasses will soon be blind from retina damage despite wearing tinted lenses.
A worker removing asbestos wears a dust mask to prevent breathing in the particulate will soon develop cancer.
A guy working in a virus lab wears a medical mask to prevent getting the virus. He will soon be a very sick individual.

The point of this mind exercise is to get people to realize that just because you are wearing PPE does not make you safe. Is the PPE being worn properly? Is the PPE effective against the environment that you are entering?

Just food for thought the next time a politician tells you to wear a mask to stop the spread of a virus. There isn't a mask on the market that will do that. You need a full pressurized suit with an outside air source for that.

the mask is mostly to prevent carriers of the virus from spreading it via droplets. (talking, coughing sneezing, yelling, etc.).

If a sick person has their mouth covered up it will effectively prevent its spread. and since the virus can spread before people experience symptoms its a particularly effective preventative measure. health officials encourage mask use to prevent people who already have it, knowingly and unknowingly, from spreading it.

Think of it less like a helmet and more like a viral container.

@NoahB Did you hear about the fellow that was covid positive and was given a mask to wear while he coughed. A petrie dish nearby was later tested and found to contain covid virus. Another covid positive was given a mask to wear. After a short time his mask was tested. There were viruses on the inside and outside of the mask. It was almost like the mask wasn't there. Of course when you are trying to keep houseflies under control with a barbed wire fence that has all its gates open.....

@hippyjoe1955 In which quantities, and how far was the viral RNA found? And were they able to cultivate it?

@Elessar yeah, idk if i'd compare a mask to a barbed wire fence or the virus to flies. Its more like using a screen door. It will keep most at bay but there is no real way to keep flies out of your house. also the virus being in a mask worn by a sick person doesn't surprise me. But better they be in the mask than my breathing air hahaha
