Like it was only a few decades ago!

You'd have to make the effort to go out to real shops, of which there were far more and far more variety in premises and goods before first the supermarkets then big-out-of-town shopping-centres and now the Internet started hollowing out town-centres.

Not so easy I know, if you live in a rural location miles from the nearest town, especially if you need rely on public transport -if it exists in your locality. An acquaintance who'd worked for a supermarket shop-equipment manufacturer told me that the supermarkets (and presumably out-of-town shopping-centres) were originally designed to discourage pedestrian and disabled shoppers. They could not refuse such customers but really only wanted those who arrive by car and buy trolley-loads at a time.

You could view the goods and try them or seek advice on them if applicable, before buying. You often met friends and relatives. You could pass the time in a café.

It was easier to use services like the Post Office and banks, too.

Less convenient? Possibly, especially given my caveat about rural life; but it may have meant you tended to think about what you wanted or needed, and buy more carefully.

And of course, we were not plagued by on-line snoopers trying to steal our details and money.

Better as I would be shopping local and able to not buy the cheap Chinese shit like Amazon sells because they do not list the country of origin.
