Trying to teach your kids "not to see race" isn't helping anybody

Let's normalize teaching kids go be accepting and educated when it comes to other cultures and ethnicities rather than overlooking them. Discrimination exists DUE to a lack of sympathy, connection and understanding to people who are different. Don't teach them to push away differences, teach them to embrace and learn from them. Because kids will see race, whether you want them to or not. That little white child just asked the little brown child if her skin is that color because "she doesn't clean it". That little mixed child with a tight afro is crying because she wants "pretty" long hair like the children of other races. That new kid who just moved to this country and doesn't speak much English is sitting alone because everyone thinks the food he packs is weird and gross. Teach them not to be afraid of the differences. Teach them to notice the differences and embrace them.

I’ve never heard a non black person use the term “pretty hair”.
That is a term only used by black women.

@AthrillatheHunt my family is very very mixed so I wouldn't know honestly. I've got white, black, brown, and everything in between 😂 my little cousin has really tight curls though and has a lot of issues with it. She's five and goes on and on about how she wishes she had "pretty" hair or "princess" hair, and how she looks like a boy. I bought her a dollar store coloring book with black princesses, and a lot of them have afros, and I've been helping her to color in the "princess hair" (black hair) so I think that's been helping a little. She's still mad she can't braid it or anything though

Where do you think your niece heard the term “pretty hair” from?
A racist white girl accusing her of not having it, or a black woman complimenting her for kinda having it?@Lucyy
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@AthrillatheHunt could have been either. She's had issues with her hair for a while, and I think it comes from her sister. Her sister has that "model mixed girl" hair and likes to hold it over her head, so realistically I think it was something the older sister was exposed to and pushed down into her little sister. So the whole family, black and white, makes a point of telling her how pretty her hair is. But it's just one of those stigmas black girls have to deal with. We can work to eliminate it, but there's that standard of beauty that unfortunately is pushed onto children as well

Standards are changing. Thankfully. @Lucyy

Uh. I don’t think so. Women say it to other women all the time@AthrillatheHunt
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I don’t see as many anorexic women being called beautiful as years ago.@Chevy454
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@AthrillatheHunt there's definitely more of a "everyone is beautiful" mindset in the younger generations. People are exposed to more differences now than ever before. But there's still that stigma about beauty, particularly black beauty, that isn't going away any time soon. I am glad people are becoming more accepting, though
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
Where did anorexic come into the conversation @AthrillatheHunt
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I was talking about standards of beauty changing.@Chevy454
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@Chevy454 standards of beauty change all the time. Once very thin was the standard. Now it's more so "curvy". Standards change each generation. And current generations are beginning to embrace that there isn't one solid definition of beauty.
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
I prefer very thin, but that had nothing to do with my comment about women saying other women’s hair is pretty. @Lucyy
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
I like huge boobs and could care less about hair.@Chevy454
Lucyy · 22-25, F
@Chevy454 oh, I get it😂😂 you said "I don't think so" right after he said "standards are changing". We assumed you were replying to the conversation lmao
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
Well I personally hate huge boobs. Still has nothing to do my original comment. You said you never heard a “non black person” use the term pretty hair. Yes they do. A lot of women do@AthrillatheHunt
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
You are so wrong. Huge tits are where it’s at dude. Pretty hair is almost exclusively a black term.
This would make a good opinion poll question@Chevy454
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
Big tits just make them look fatter than they might be. @AthrillatheHunt
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
That’s what my best buds all say. That’s why we’re best buds. Wwe don’t compete for women
You and I might get along well in real life dude..@Chevy454
