How do people ruin their own lives?

Rebellion, seeking pleasure, revenge, greed, being self centered. In my opinion we don’t intend to “ruin” our lives but when challenged, we react and often the reaction has the unintended consequence of being harmful to ourselves and others. Often the challenges are external (unfair, unjust, unfortunate), but we do choose how we react.
