Why dont we show compassion to drug addicts

I think we should stop punishing drug addicts. We should show them compassion. Drug addiction is a medical problem not morality problem.

Cause they choose to take drugs

@strongbow Psychologists don't think its as much of a choice as you imagine. Addicts are in emotional pain. Just like if you were in a lot of physical pain it would be hard for you not to do drugs. Drug addicts are in so much emotional pain they cant help themselves.

That’s a treatment approach, and it makes sense. But choice is what got them there. @Bandit2398

@Bandit2398 They still chose that path, there are alot of struggling people who never chose drugs as a way out, ive had physical pain and take pain killers but dont keep taking them once the pain is gone because i know its not the answer. taking drugs for emotional pain is a copout

@GallantlyChurlish Choice is not what got them there. Its traumatic experiences that got them there. All the drug addicts I know I am convinced that if they didn't take drugs they would just find some other way to screw up their lives.
You should google Dr gabor mate drug addiction.

If trauma causes drug addiction, why isn’t everyone who experienced trauma a drug addict?@Bandit2398

@GallantlyChurlish Because everyone is different. different people deal with trauma in different ways. Some people just try to tough it out and not talk about it which is the worst thing you can do.

@GallantlyChurlish Also drug addiction isn't the only type of addiction. Some people become addicted to gambling or food.
There is also a genetic predisposition to addiction. People without these particular genes wont become addicts from trauma. Its a very good question though.
Putting people in jail just adds to their trauma. that's why punishment doesn't work and just make them worst addicts.

@GallantlyChurlish I want to turn your question around on you. If drugs cause drug addiction then why doesn’t everyone who take drugs become an addict? Why don’t we see everyone who gets drugs in the hospitals become addicts?
