Or would you have rather been a millionaire before age 10 because your parents recorded you playing with toys and other people's kids enjoyed watching footage of you do so?

It's not so much about digging a ditch. It's about how well you dig the ditch. You are not your job, you are a human being worthy of respect. That seems to get lost in the "you are what you do" paradigm these daze.
