What phrases did you used to hear that you rarely/don't hear anymore?

This was inspired by someone who said they didn't hear "it beggars belief!" anymore and dared me to say it in everyday conversation.

To be honest I don't use a lot of these "phrases" (or whatever the term is) but once I had a half-foreign friend who wasn't familiar with well known ones like once in a full moon and it made me think generally people use them quite a lot in everyday speech without thinking about it.

Maybe it's the part of the country I'm from where these phrases were popular in the past but I don't here any of these any more:

By 'eck.
You make a better door than a window.
You'll have it dark.
You've made a wakes of that.
Feggy-eyed.
Doffhead.
Piffy on a rock bun.

@GlassDog Only heard of By eck! 😁 Do many people still call people 'duck'?!
Now I'm interested in what those things mean!

@amethyst1 Hehe, you're not from the north west of England then. Duck is a Derbyshire thing and we don't get it much in Lancashire, but we do occasionally.

Better door than a window : when someone is obscuring your view (usually of the TV)

You'll have it dark : If you don't hurry up, it'll be night-time when we finish this

Made a wakes of it : taken a lot away (like in Wakes Weeks when factory workers all went on holiday at the same time)

Feggy-eyed : when you've still got sleep in your eyes

Doffhead : general term of derision, generally is someone has a daft haircut

Piffy on a rock bun : the awkwardness of standing on your own when you are supposed to be meeting someone and they are late.

@JaggedLittlePill Wow, I had no idea people in other countries said it. It's one of my favourite phrases from my childhood.

@GlassDog Yes, I am trying to remember a few my mother said but I might need more coffee for the bran function to kick in ;)
