Is that a desperation thing or a wiser with age thing?

Size of the body isn’t as important as size of the mind.

There are many shapes of healthy.

Being too heavy can be unhealthy, but also being too thin can be unhealthy as well.

I suspect it’s less desperation and more a factor of life experience.
