In many poorer countries where a service job doesn't offer a real living wage , a tip is a way of feeding the family, Some Asian countries and African countries also extend this to fictional service fees or "bribes" so that low paid government workers can put food on the table and educate their kids. Personally I find it odd the this system can extend to places like America.
Of course, an individual going above and beyond with service should be appreciated with a tip.
