I actually got married before wedding registries were a thing. Back then you might reveal your china selection at a bridal shower, but that was about it. Result?
4 woks. 3 toasters. More wine glasses than you can imagine. We still have several boxes of them unopened(neither of us drinks wine).

It was lol. By the 3rd light box of the same size we were onto them.
Anyhow, when I first came across the online registries, I thought what you did - takes the special-ness out of the gesture. But today I'm even comfortable enough to ask a parent if the couple would actually prefer cash. Many young couples go in debt on their wedding & reception.
And believe me, that day is coming when whatever you give isn't acknowledged with a thank-you card. Then you can think of me and say "That wise old fuck!" :)
