It's illegal to ask about marital status in an interview

@MissMollyCharlotte0702 @aaatheaaa Before interviewing people,HR told me not to ask about marital status because it's illegal.

It's not explicitly illegal on a federal level. But under it EEOC, it's illegal to discriminate based on sex and as an extention pregnancy and child rearing. Plus most states have broader discrimination laws against this. It's definitely illegal.
In America it is. No one is allowed to discriminate by asking personal questions. @aaatheaaa

@aaatheaaa lol this sums up 90% of discussion on the internet. "You're wrong, I'm right. No proof needed."

@aaatheaaa I don't think you know what discrimination means
People see it that way unfortunately. It’s not just me saying it. People will say,”I’m the one being interviewed...not my wife and kids or husband and kids.”
I’ve been on many interviews and never once was I asked if I was married or single. Most companies will not bring that up in interviews in the States. @aaatheaaa
It’s actually not illegal which does surprise me a little, but most companies do not ask personal questions.@StoicGrappler

@MissMollyCharlotte0702 It might not necessarily be illegal to ask but it can be used as grounds for a discrimination case, each state has something in place for this. For example, Florida has the Civil Rights Bill of 1992.
Yes I agree.@StoicGrappler

@StoicGrappler Just because it's illegal, doesn't mean everyone obeys it-as I'd like to point out. Almost every job interview I've ever had, I was asked if I was married or had plans to be pregnant in the near future, because they'd gotten frustrated with hiring women who work a year or two and then leave. Or if I had kids, because typically people with kids need to be able to take more sick leave. Its a little bit annoying, but I do understand why they are asking.
