While the two are closely related, Dolphins have an intelligence that far exceeds that of most animal species and have demonstrated self-awareness of their own (at least in captivity). Whales are smart, but nowhere nearly quite like dolphins; I'd suspect the dolphins would learn much quicker when to fight and when to run.
