They had usurped the true priesthood, but having robbed the true priests of their offices, the true priests went off, into the wilderness and became the Essene Community, later known as the copiers, and preservers of scripture, whose preserved work, when discovered in the 20th century, became known as the
Dead Sea Scrolls.
The usurpers of the priesthood, who sought the death of Jesus, were always frauds. Keep that in mind when they pass judgement on you, my dear brother.
