My dad came home drunk as hell this morning

That is a distressing and hard thing to live with. When alcohol grips tight the real person disappears and everyone suffers. His torment becomes yours. I hope one day he will find sobriety and you will find the father you have loved.

My father used to do the same thing. I never knew what kind of mood he would be in when he came home, if he was drunk, if he was just in a shitty mood, or if he was happy (which was rare). I was anxious and fearful all the time. He used to slap us around and say some pretty terrible things when he was drunk. He was just very cruel.

I don't know how old you are but if you are 18 or over, please take Methdozer's suggestion and get out. No one deserves to live like that and honestly, your sanity is on the line. I left as soon as I was able to. It took quite a few years but I finally verbally flattened that man. I laid into him for about 2 hours one Thanksgiving. He said something that triggered my temper and the flood gates opened. Once that occurred, our relationship changed. I do think it helped that he stopped drinking hard liquor and maybe, he matured a bit more as he aged but, during the last 10 years of his life, we had a very good relationship.
