Do You Think That Was An Attempt To Scam Other Customers?

I went to Braum’s store to get some milk. There was a couple with a cart full of groceries getting them scanned by the cashier. Most people don’t buy everything at a little store like that, maybe get milk, ice cream, fruit or some item they need for dinner so they don’t have to go to a larger store and wait in line. The prices on dairy is good but everything is marked more than Walmart or Aldi (nearest grocery stores) have them marked. Their purchases added up to over $90. The man took his card and swiped it a couple of times and it wouldn’t register. Then he asked for a piece of cash register paper and put it over the card and swiped it a few more times. It didn’t register. Then he asked for a plastic bag and put it over the paper and swiped it a few more times. This took a few more minutes while we were waiting in line. They ended up having to remove the purchases from the cash register so I had to go to the other line. I thought it odd to begin with that they were buying so much at a little store plus the time the man took to keep swiping his card. I was thinking maybe he wanted someone to offer some cash to pay for it for them.

Nope. I have seen that same thing at grocery stores.
Some cards need to be replaced due to the strip being worn.

And some people do not like Walmart or Aldi.

@SW-User I have never seen it happen before. I heard someone say on Sunday that the scammers were out in full force in that area of the city.

@cherokeepatti First time I saw a cashier do that with a receipt and then a bag, I thought the guy was nuts! lol But... he got it working and the person was quite happy!

It's a scam if they somehow get your card, but otherwise...it's your choice to offer or not. If it is a scam, people need to be watchful. I'd offer to pay maybe for a gallon of milk and a few items, but not that amount.
Could be. Or it could be he left his card up against his cell phone or other magnetized item. It’s always good to keep your eyes open and exercise a healthy small dose of cynicism. @cherokeepatti

@stratosranger Yeah if you have a magnetic closure on a purse it can temporarily deactivate a card with a magnetic strip. I had a friend come to Walmart saying her card wasn’t working. I think she had one of those magnetic closures on her purse and the card got too close.
