Why do cops make you sit in their front seat occasionally when they run your plates?

@Tumbleweed That's a danger to multiple parties in multiple ways. It unduly prolongs a police-citizen interaction and creates more opportunity for danger. And let's be honest, we all know the intent behind it. I've spent a lot of time around cops and never heard of this. It's not right.

@WowwGirl Don't get me wrong. Cops (at least in the US) have the right to ask you to step out of the car, or stay in the car, as rhey please. But... getting in their front seat is weird.
