A fifth grade student in Florida was arrested over the weekend and charged with sending a text message threatening to carry out a mass shooting, authorities said.

In a statement Saturday, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said it had learned earlier that day of a "threatening text message" sent by a student at an elementary school.

It said its local school threat enforcement team was immediately notified and started investigating. The 10-year-old boy was interviewed and charged later with "making a written threat to conduct a mass shooting," the sheriff's office said.

In video shared by authorities, the boy can be seen being led into a police vehicle.

There will be those that say it was over-reaching and that a 10 year old can't do that kind of violence

And those that 8 years from now will ask why more wasn't done when he showed clear signs of violence at an early age.

He WON'T be tried as an adult - he'll be introduced to the juvenile justice system - for better or worse and hopefully get counseling.
@Pretzel Exactly. And unfortunately one can never know what access a 10 year old might actually have to firearms. Some parents are negligent, and it’s why we hear about kids finding parents’ guns and killing siblings or playmates (or themselves) all the time.

The kid needs to be confined and evaluated to see if he is a threat to himself of the public.
If he walks, how does anyone benefit in any way?

Everyone sees the shooters, they're our role models, now.
Will he be considered a domestic terrorist?

Smh, how is a 10 year old going to get a hold of a gun?

@Spunkylama this reminds me of the time at my highschool some a classmate said that he wanted to blow my school up and my math teacher wrote him up. Like a teenager is actually going to find a bomb 🙄
@Chickie More to the point, is how does a 10 year old master the use of a device to disseminate such information?
@Chickie There was, I don’t know if it is still available, “ The anarchist’s cookbook”. But hey, there is the internet and if the student was good in and had a working knowledge of chemistry and explosives, he doesn’t need to find a bomb, he could actually make it. Just something to think about.
