@Dlrannie I'm curious if an armed private citizen stopped an assault on you or a family member would your thoughts change?

@MarineBob it’s a highly unlikely situation as I live in a country that has strict gun licensing and very few private citizens own guns.
TJNewton · M
@MarineBob Annie would never experience that situation and believe me if anyone did start that with her they would be dead within seconds

Uma thurman and kill bill are nothing when it comes to self defense that annie as mastered
ChatterinSeuss · 61-69, M
@Dlrannie not having a gun here means to always be fearful,,, by the time police get to you ,, it can be one of two things,,, you are already dead, or on your way to a hospital.. and remember when you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have them..
ChatterinSeuss · 61-69, M
@TJNewton Stop believing in movies,, those are actors playing a script.. Real life is a whole lot different.. here in New York self defense don't work against a gun..
TJNewton · M
@ChatterinSeuss Dont tell me what to do
ChatterinSeuss · 61-69, M
@TJNewton ha ha ha ha ha ha
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@ChatterinSeuss Or the government as in Nazi Germany and Communist Russia.

@ChatterinSeuss that’s exacltu what’s happening in Australia, gun control took place after an inside job oh sorry I mean a mass shooting in Port Arthur.
Domestic violence is on the rise along with home invasions and guns are usually involved because criminals don’t listen to gun control. There’s a spate of drive by shootings in gang affiliated areas of South West Sydney and the list goes on.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@ChatterinSeuss There is NOTHING more useless than women taking "self-defense" courses! I went to one...I am 5 foot exactly, 98 pounds and Hollywood and feminist maniacs have somehow convinced us the laws of nature and physics don't apply anymore but I won't have Hollywood technicians to help me beat the Hell out of the 6 foot 200 pound guy who wants to rape me.

It seems American history is known better by foreigners than Americans: in the old American West they didn't call the gun "the great equalizer" for no reason.
ChatterinSeuss · 61-69, M
@Abrienda I believe you 100% ,,, and yes American history is known more by foreigners than Americans themselves only because our school system still has a lot to learn..., and I am sorry a 5 foot woman is defenseless against a 250 pound man... give that woman a gun and she will feel safe walking down any street...
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@ChatterinSeuss The movie "Kill Bill" has probably killed more WOMEN in real life than it did fictional men in the film.

I am sorry, too, but that's life and no propaganda will change it - "Kill Bill" has probably killed more women in REAL life than it did fictional men in the movie. That's why my father taught me how to shoot.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Dlrannie Pepper spray is far easier to use for most people.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@Lila15 and it's tasty
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@Dlrannie And what to do with those people who might just believe in the US Bill of Rights? Repeal the 2nd Amendment and arrest them?
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Abrienda I think she means voluntarily. There are too many guns in the US for the government to take away. Also, it's very difficult to repeal an amendment. You need two-thirds of Congress or state legislatures, which will never happen for the 2nd amendment.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@Lila15 I know about your Constitution and Bill of Rights, thank you. That was my point, the difficulty. A magic wand will not do it. And how exactly do you "stop" people owning guns? By asking them nicely? What you think she means is no more true than what I think she means yet either way as usual the solutions offered by the one side in this argument are only emotional, impractical...and illegal.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Abrienda Personally I don't like guns but you're right, we can't wave a magic wand and make them go away. Plus they are very popular and regardless of whether you think something is right or wrong, if something is popular, the government shouldn't pass a law against it.

Although you're more likely to be killed by gunfire in the US compared to other countries, realistically it's pretty far down on the list of ways to die. You're far more likely to die from heart attack or stroke, and if we had decent preventative care here, a lot of those could be avoided. I think we should be focusing more on improving medical care and access to it.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@Lila15 That has been my positon all along here. In fact you are more likely to be beaten to death in the USA than killed with a so-called assault rifle. This a mental health and degenerate society problem (the parents of the Columbine killers never went into their rooms. Had they done they would have found the arsenal they collected. When asked they said "Oh we wanted to give them "their space". What kind of answer is that?). Every one of my comments here say that so I absolutely agree with you.
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Abrienda Better mental health care would definitely help. Here's the problem. Whenever there's a mass shooting, everyone on both the right and the left says we need better treatment for the mentally ill. Inevitably, someone says people should have to provide their medical records when they buy a gun, at least pertaining to psychiatric treatment.

The problem with this is that this would violate confidentiality. Someone who wants a gun might avoid getting treatment if they thought this would prevent them from buying one. Also, a lot of shooters have no mental health history at all. And the conservatives who are against gun control, are also against expanding mental health care if this will be paid for with taxes. So ultimately, nothing happens even though everyone seems to agree on what's needed.

And of course, better parenting would help, but it's not like you can legislate that. We can hardly keep up with the kids who are actually suffering real abuse; we can't expand the system to intervene in families where the only bad thing the parents are doing is "giving the kid his space." Many people would not even consider that wrong, much less abusive. And many kids thrive if they're given space to develop. It's only a problem if their interests are dangerous.

Posting guards at schools or arming teachers might help, but school already feels like prison to a lot of kids, so making it even more bunker-like isn't the answer. Plus, if arming the teachers would take away funds for textbooks, that wouldn't be an improvement.

I don't know what the answer is.
Abrienda · 26-30, F
@Lila15 I don't either. I can only look at countries where I have lived where people have a lot of guns (Israel, Saudi Arabia. Poland) and countries that dont (Czech Republic where I now live) and the one thing all three have in common is a society where family still remains strong and public behavior is strongly SELF regulated. There is a line from the movie Quo Vaids where Marcus Vinicius says "Before countries can change, people must change."
Lila15 · 22-25, F
@Abrienda Well, I mean, obviously if the culture was different, then people's actions would be different. We've definitely done a lot to damage the family here. I'm not sure I would say that Saudi Arabia is my idea of a healthy family culture, however. The way I hear how women are treated there is sickening. And Israel is unusual where everyone is in the army for a few years after high school and is expected to take part in defending the country for their entire life to some extent. In the U.S. we're not surrounded by enemies who want to kill us. Poland I have no idea. I know that the Catholic Church is still very strong there.

I think the U.S. has the highest gun ownership rate of any country in the world, by far. Yemen is second and their gun ownership rate is half of ours. And Yemen isn't exactly a place I'd want to live.
