Freedom of speech versus consequences

It amazes me how many people here and online in general genuinely believe freedom of speech means freedom from any consequences for their words.

That is not how it works.

I amazes me as to the interpretation of some people's idea as to what free speech actually entails.
What I see in society today is that, if one is in agreement with those railng the most on a topic, one is okay. However, discourse (and rationality) goes out the window, and all the usual invectives begin to show themselves, (as well as the true colors of the initiators) when words such as "but," or "however" are employed in counter opinion.
Lemmings........I see lemmings
