The United States has one of the highest prison rates in the western world

And often for non violent offenses. Like take for example the war on drugs. Having drugs can take you to prison when there should be a more rehabilitative approach. This country punishes non violent crime too harshly. And on the other end punishes self defense sometimes as assault and murder especially in liberal states. I consider myself moderately liberal on most things but if you can go to jail for shooting a criminal that broke into your house or tried to attack you but you didn’t try to run away that is just plain stupid. I also think going to jail just for having weapons for self defense like knives being too long, some states outlawed brass knuckles, having a gun to protect yourself is ridiculous too. And it’s stupid but if a human trafficking victim kills their slave master they get charged with murder.

People you can’t rehabilitate however are molesters, rapists, cold blooded serial killers and the like. Personally I think for those crimes vigilante justice is the perfect solution and revenge deserves to be served.
