The godmother of Catania: Now the mafia lady is in prison
The notorious Santapaola-Ercolano clan is once again the focus of the Italian judiciary. The Carabinieri have arrested Grazia Santapaola, who is accused of no longer merely being the wife of a boss, but of actively leading the „family“ in Catania.
Catania – Under the coordination of the DDA Catania, the Carabinieri of the ROS have dealt a significant blow to organized crime in Sicily. This morning, officers executed an order issued by the investigating judge for the pre-trial detention of Grazia Santapaola. The charges are serious: the woman is accused of membership in a mafia-type association pursuant to Article 416 bis of the Italian Criminal Code. Grazia Santapaola is no stranger to the Sicilian mafia hierarchy: she is the cousin of former Cosa Nostra boss Benedetto Santapaola and the wife of Salvatore „Turi“ Amato, former leader of the Ottantapalmi group.
From the shadows to the center of power
According to the public prosecutor's office, the latest findings, which are based in part on the investigations carried out during Operation Mercurio in January last year, mark a turning point. For the first time, there appears to be evidence that a woman in this clan not only acted as a relative or messenger, but also played a full operational role. Grazia Santapaola is said to have used her membership of the „blood family“ to exercise real Mafia power. According to investigators, she directly managed the illegal business dealings of the group, whose historical head remains her imprisoned husband. The aim was to secure the livelihood of the criminal organization and the families of those in prison. In doing so, she apparently acted as an authoritarian figure who was also recognized by other criminal groups in the historic center of Catania.
Defense of family honor
The investigation files document various episodes in which the accused resolutely resolved conflicts. For example, she is said to have intervened in tensions with the Nardo clan to protect the son of an imprisoned regent. She also played a leading role in a dispute with Christian Paternò of the San Giovanni Galermo group, who allegedly refused to show her respect. Even during the conflicts with the Cappello clan in 2023, she is said to have actively intervened to defend the „honor” and criminal reputation of the Santapaola family.
