There is nothing productive about confining someone

Giving them a criminal record which doesn’t allows them to easily get a job

Putting them on probation that they may eventually violate if they don’t have the money to pay which will be difficult to come up with considering they can’t get a job because they have a record

So now It becomes a cycle. violating your probation, going to jail, not being able to get a job, and having an increasingly growing jail record which further prevents you from being able to find a job

Speaking for prison not jail. 64% of inmates return within 4 years of being released.

I’m not saying don’t throw people in jail but we have got to come up with a more effective system

There is a lot wrong and a lot right with the system.

Having been in prison for 23 years I believe that just locking people up isn't helpful even if they deserve it and want to be. Only yje last few years I was inside were actually useful but that was after I'd made a choice myself.

Parole and probation are very hard to navigate. I deliberately avoided parole for years and no one took any notice.

Probation is hard to stick with. I've nearly gone back inside twice just cos of stupid situations, like losing where I was living.
