I Have Been To Court

I was just there yesterday. I was going there to trial on a speeding ticket. I sped through a construction zone. I figured I was in big trouble. I was looking at a $550 fine, not to mention a possibility I would be denied traffic school.

I had one thing going in my favor: My brother is a sheriff's deputy, traffic cop. He broke down the law I (allegedly) broke and helped me construct a defense. He even knew the judge that I was going to be put before. He told me all the things/mistakes people say and do, thinking they'll be found "not guilty"...only to end up guilty.

He told me, "Don't let them intimidate you. That's what they want so you'll make a mistake."

So I came in to court yesterday trying to look like an adult. Dressed nice, wore a tie, etc.

They called my name. "Present."
They called the officer's name. Nothing.

Murmuring at the front of the courtroom.

The judge sat back. "What? He retired?"

I walked out of there. Ticket, fine, memory...washed away like "tears in rain". ☺

Not condoning speeding through an obvious construction zone. That's no bueno. But sometimes they set them up in a way that's a trap. That's not cool either.
Assuming that's what happened to you then right on. You freaking scored. It must have felt SO good walking out of that court,
Too bad you didn't get to put the tie to good use and represent yourself though. You don't get too many chances to say, "Your honor? May I approach the bench?"

When I told my brother, he was pretty disgusted. He considers the area a speed trap. He says that what makes it worse is that construction workers are not easily seen. A ticketing officer can essentially cite you for the maximum whether a construction worker is there or not. That's what made my brother so angry. "Drivers are set up to fail in that area."

The good news? I learned my lesson. Permanently.

There you go.
You can definitely put a chalk mark in the "Win" column.
And good luck with that "permanently" strategy. Might work better for you than it has for me. :)
