Senator Josh Hawley confronted former special counsel Jack Smith during a heated Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, accusing Smith of giving false testimony and calling for him to be disbarred.
Hawley alleged that Smith’s office obtained National Archives records containing text messages from 44 members of Congress in 2023, despite Smith later denying that his team obtained such messages. Smith rejected Hawley’s allegations and defended the conduct of his investigations, saying his team followed the law and Department of Justice policies. The clash has intensified scrutiny over the Trump investigations, congressional records and the political dispute surrounding Smith’s former special counsel work.
