Town of Tonawanda, NY – September 25th, 2007 – The Town of Tonawanda Police Department reports the arrest of 25-year-old Mariam Saleh in connection with a robbery at Ellicott Creek Park.
Authorities say Saleh approached 23-year-old Melissa Conrad, a U.S. Air Force Security Forces veteran and current Army Reservist, while Conrad was at the park. Saleh allegedly pulled a knife and demanded Conrad’s purse. During the confrontation, Saleh reportedly began a political rant criticizing the U.S. military and the Iraq war. Conrad briefly complied but then defended herself, subduing Saleh until officers arrived.
A 24-year-old Town of Tonawanda policewoman handcuffed Saleh and escorted her to a police vehicle. Saleh was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being processed at the Town of Tonawanda Police Department.
Saleh faces charges of robbery in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon. She remains in police custody pending arraignment.
The Town of Tonawanda Police Department urges the public to remain vigilant in public areas and report suspicious activity immediately.
