If a combatant is not wearing a uniform in combat, they risk losing the legal protections of a lawful combatant, including prisoner of war status, and may be treated as a spy. According to the Geneva Conventions, combatants must distinguish themselves from the civilian population to be afforded legal protection, which is typically achieved by wearing a uniform or carrying arms openly. If captured while not in uniform, they could face severe consequences, including execution without trial.
