What crimes deserve a harsher punishment? On the flip side, what crimes deserve a lesser punishment?

Punishment with the goal of retaliation doesn't work. Punishing harsher doesn't help to prevent crime. It never has. All that is, is an - albeit understandable - emotional response that serves no purpose other than to cause even more misery.

Punishment should be focused on either rehabilitation or protection of society. The harshest punishment would be lifelong imprisonment.
